Dr. James Barry

Registered Psychological Assistant

James's experience in the substance use disorder field combines strong clinical skills with mental health knowledge. Before coming to DAP, he worked for 10 years as a Counselor at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation where he was instrumental in the design and facilitation of LGBTQ Integrated Programming, Young Adult Programming, and Outpatient Services. In 2018, he joined the Behavioral Health Department at DAP and continues to develop and facilitate LGBTQ programming curriculum. A highly motivated individual, he is enthusiastic about working for an organization that makes a difference and focuses on effective clinical interactions.

James prides himself on the ability to bring his experience, compassion, and understanding to clients. He is an active and non-judgmental listener and help clients navigate life-related, and many times challenging, issues. He accomplishes these goals by conveying to clients that he is concerned for their well-being and through a therapeutic alliance that explores and enhances their quality of life.

Prior to embarking on his career in health care, James worked as a music producer/engineer in Los Angeles, guiding musicians and helping them to resolve creative conflict. He is a Licensed Advanced Alcohol Drug Counselor, earned a Doctorate in Psychology through the California Southern University, Irvine, and has been a featured speaker for a diverse group of organizations interested in LGBTQ issues. He's also held several service positions in 12-step programs. In addition, James is the author of the book, Substance Abuse in the LGBTQ Community: Exploring Interventions for Prevention (2017).

James is passionate about the DAP mission and enjoys the variety of clientele with whom he works.

"I want my clients to know that I'm here to help them and that what we share between us is confidential. This helps to provide a safe, non-judgmental experience focused on change and growth."
