Desert AIDS Project launches new, more interactive website with a free song download from an international AIDS activist

(PALM SPRINGS, CA – August 30, 2011)
To recognize their 27th anniversary of providing services for those with HIV and AIDS in our community, Desert AIDS Project recently launched a redesigned website — www.desertaidsproject.org — intended to meet the needs of clients, donors, volunteers, or anyone simply looking for more information about the disease.
“We always consider the three words from our logo – Care, Prevention, and Advocacy – when we speak personally with clients, donors, volunteers, or anyone else. As one of our primary communication tools, we wanted our website to be just as interactive,” said David Brinkman, CEO of Desert AIDS Project. “Our friends at E-Works Media helped us create a more interesting and accessible online gateway to a wealth of information. Now, whether you need to access our clinics or social services, are looking to get tested for HIV, want to volunteer with us, or buy a ticket to one of our fundraisers, this is the best place to start.”
Like many other nonprofits and most businesses, Desert AIDS Project has fully embraced the online world, with Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube becoming essential components of its communications toolkit. Other sites, like Yelp and Foursquare, have been utilized to build “buzz” around specific fundraisers, like the annual Dining Out for Life event and the upcoming Palm Springs AIDS Walk on October 22. D.A.P. is already in the process of developing a mobile version of the new website.
But in this 30th year of the AIDS epidemic – still a growing problem, both globally and locally – Desert AIDS Project has been pleased at the way clients and other volunteer advocates have picked up the cause that “AIDS is not over” as their own.
A shining example of this kind of AIDS activism is Nicholas Snow, a long-standing entertainment journalist and actor who recently returned to Palm Springs after living in Thailand for many years, to access services as a client at Desert AIDS Project. Well-known already throughout southeast Asia, Snow has written a song and created a music video campaign designed to reach millions of people worldwide about the importance of HIV testing, increased promotion of safer sex practices, and to empower the efforts of others in the battle against HIV/AIDS.
The home page of Desert AIDS Project’s new website prominently features a free download of Snow’s song “The Power to Be Strong,” as well as links to the music video subtitled in 20 languages.
“When Nicholas approached us with this opportunity to help us continue spreading our messages of Care, Prevention, and Advocacy, we knew that it was the right thing to do,” said Brinkman. “We applaud his bravery at openly telling his story as an HIV-positive man and hope that it will help others to get past the stigma that still surrounds AIDS. We think thatís the best way to just get on with helping those who need our help.”
Desert AIDS Project is the organization in our community where people living with HIV and AIDS can receive comprehensive support, including medical care, case management, and social services. D.A.P. also offers free and confidential HIV testing at a number of locations throughout the communities it serves.
