When Susan Unger joined the Desert AIDS Project Board of Directors in 2003, she was painfully aware that the span of her life was already longer than that of any of her friends she had lost to AIDS. To honor their lives, she felt compelled not only to contribute as an individual to the fight against AIDS, but also to involve others.
The fact that women and young people were now the fastest-growing groups contracting HIV worldwide, coupled with the awareness that when a woman contracts HIV her entire family is impacted, led Susan to the idea for 100 Women, a major donor program to benefit the health and well-being of local women and children. Initially inspired by the idea that just 100 women leaders could make a tremendous difference, it quickly became apparent that our valley offered the potential for much greater support from both women and men.
Susan’s achievements have made it only fitting that she become the recipient of our inaugural 100 Women Award at the 2008 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala. Her abilities and unflagging commitment to 100 Women are sure to inspire others who know that HIV and AIDS are still a very serious concern, both locally and globally.
When not giving her time to D.A.P., Susan is a management and marketing consultant. Her Palm Springs-based firm, Master Strategy, helps companies and non-profit organizations to transform their ideas into results. Master Strategy formulates and communicates winning strategies in the form of plans, proposals, presentations, and promotional materials
