(PALM SPRINGS, CA – November 25, 2008)
The first 100 people to make an appointment and take a free and confidential HIV test on Monday, December 1 will receive a $20 gas card. In order to receive the incentive – good only for tests performed at the of Desert AIDS Project’s main location at 1695 N. Sunrise in Palm Springs – those being tested must return for their test results.
Of the more than 33 million people worldwide living with HIV or AIDS, more than 1.2 million live in the U.S. And, according to the California Office of AIDS, about 40,000 Californians are HIV-positive but not aware of their status, causing between 2,500 and 5,000 new infections each year.
“Based on the most recent data available, the rate of HIV infection in the Coachella Valley is more than four times that of the national rate of infection,” said David Brinkman, Executive Director at Desert AIDS Project. “Despite very little County money directed to prevention, along with a shrinking state budget, D.A.P. provides free and confidential HIV testing, six days a week at various locations throughout the desert cities. The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is ‘leadership’ and we like to think that D.A.P. is helping to lead the fight against further HIV infection locally.”
To honor those who have already passed away from AIDS, candelaria will burn from 4:30 – 8:30 PM in front of D.A.P. on December 1. Desert AIDS Project is the organization in our community where people living with HIV and AIDS can receive comprehensive support, including medical care, case management, and social services. D.A.P. also offers confidential HIV testing at a number of locations and widespread education and prevention services for schools, civic organizations, businesses, churches, and health organizations throughout the communities it serves.
