March 10, 2006 marks the first annual National
Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. This
day is set to raise awareness on the increasing
impact of HIV/AIDS transmission on women and
girls.
Long considered a men’s disease, HIV/AIDS
is a rapidly growing public health problem among
women. HIV/AIDS remains among the leading causes
of death for U.S. women ages 25-44. The increasing
proportion of adolescent and adult women with
HIV and AIDS in the United States (U.S.) demands
a renewed commitment to prevention efforts targeted
to women.
Between 1985 and 2001, the proportion of AIDS
cases among adolescent and adult women reported
in the U.S. has grown more than three-fold, from
7 percent in 1985 to 26 percent in 2001. In the
U.S. women of color are especially hard hit by
HIV and AIDS and represented over 80% of the
reported AIDS cases in 2001. Adolescent girls
and younger women are increasingly at higher
risk for HIV/AIDS as this pandemic continues
to grow in their respective communities.
Globally, there are 17.5 million women living
with HIV. As of December 2005, women accounted
for 14% of all HIV cases and 8% of all AIDS cases
reported in California. In Riverside County,
women accounted for 7.7% of the total HIV cases
and made up 8.7% of all AIDS cases.
